AMC owns the rights to a lot of movies, but the format of AMC was at the time (and in many ways still is) skewing towards more original content. In the wake of Mad Men and The Walking Dead’s success, the question of what to do with all the movies (remember, AMC stands for American Movie Classics) remained. The answer: package it in a one-of-a-kind, never-before-seen platform and point it at hardcore fans.
I was hired by former studio head Lisa Judson to come up with the idea. I brought in my buddy Rich Kearney, who I knew could actually execute it when the idea was in place. Today, Judson and Kearney head the YEAH! product team at AMC and enjoy critical acclaim.
